COLUMBIA FAREWELL: On the morning of Feb 8th, I woke up with words to a song running through my hazy dreams.  Grabbing for a notebook and pencil, I scribbled down what I remembered: "We watched you as your chariot was lifted off the earth: Into the outer atmosphere, our planet giving birth"

Since I NEVER write words to songs, I was amazed and perplexed by this powerful impulse coming in an almost subconscious process.  After several more stanzas, I turned on the TV to chill out for a minute.  And right there I knew I had been given a most wonderful gift...because on Ch 3 was concluding the Memorial Service for the Columbia right at Kennedy Space Center in Titusville RIGHT AT THE VERY MINUTE THE COLUMBIA WAS SUPPOSED TO LAND 7 DAYS BEFORE!  

I spent the rest of the day refining the words, knowing it was meant to be a tribute to the fallen astronauts and to NASA for having the courage and persistence to launch us into the great unknown for so many years.

That night, Katherine Archer and I wrote the music using her soaring voice for the haunting melody and mine for the double harmony.  We both cried many times as we heard the words speaking to the world about our loss.  It was recorded the following day, with many instruments and lots of love.

Knowing that I wanted to donate a percentage of the gross proceeds, I spent many hours to contact the right person from The Challenger Center in Washington D.C. It was all arranged, that a portion of all proceeds from my song on MP3, CD,  Enhanced CD and/or DVD would go toward the astronauts' family and education of future space scientists.

Well, about a week later I got a call from FLORIDA TODAY, asking if they could do a story on coping with grief, using us as the centerpiece.  To my surprise, they sent a photographer, and  well-known reporter Billy Cox to cover the story.  Instead of the expected 15 minute interview, he stayed AN HOUR AND A HALF!   Although he was clear that this was a bigger story about how others deal with tragedy, I was hopeful for a paragraph or two near the comics.

Imagine my surprise, when I saw my album on the FRONT PAGE of Florida Today!  And the entire PEOPLE section was filled with my interview!  Wow.  And it gets better...they published the whole article online AND the song in Quicktime.  Go here for the article and to hear.
